PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) and IPoE (IP over Ethernet) are two different ways your modem connects to your ISP. Think of them as two different languages your modem can speak to the network.
PPPoE is a more traditional method that requires you to enter a username and password to log in to your internet service. This is commonly used for VDSL (FTTN/FTTB) connections.
IPoE is a simpler, more modern method that automatically assigns an IP address without the need for a username and password. This is typically used for Fibre-based connections (FTTP/FTTC/HFC).
Step-by-Step Guide to Changing Settings
The exact steps can vary slightly depending on your modem's brand and model, but the general process is the same. This guide is for common modem-router units from brands like TP-Link, Netgear, and D-Link.
Step 1: Access Your Modem's Admin Panel
Connect a computer directly to your modem with an Ethernet cable.
Open a web browser (like Chrome, Firefox, or Edge).
Type your modem's default IP address into the address bar. This is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. You can find the correct address in your modem's user manual or on a sticker on the device itself.
You'll be prompted to log in. Enter the default username and password, which are often admin and password or admin and admin. If these don't work, check the sticker on your modem or the user manual for the correct details.
Step 2: Find the Internet Connection Settings
Once you're logged in, navigate to the main settings page.
Look for a section titled "Internet Settings," "WAN Settings," or "Network Setup."
You should see an option to select your internet connection type.
Step 3: Change from PPPoE to IPoE
In the connection type drop-down menu, select IPoE (Dynamic IP).
The fields for username and password should disappear or become inactive.
Click "Apply" or "Save." Your modem may need to restart, which can take a few minutes.
Step 4: Verify Your Connection
After the modem has restarted, check if you have an active internet connection. The "Internet" or "WAN" light on the modem should be green.
